The 5th RIPESS (Reseau Intercontinental de Promotion de l’Economie Sociale Solidaire) International Meeting of Social Solidarity Economy (SSE) was conducted from October 15-18, 2013 at the University of the Philippines Diliman. The conference was attended by 700 participants from all over the world. Aside from Filipino delegates, the participants came from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and Latin America and the Caribbean.
The four-day conference includes discussions on the state of SSE in the continents, Self-Organized Activities (SOA), thematic workshops, and presentation of statements of commitment and action plans. A solidarity market, wherein products of different cooperatives and informal workers can be bought, was set up at the CSWCD grounds.
The UP-CSWCD is one of the partner organizations for the conference. The SOA with the themes “Exploring SSE as a Pathway to Inclusive Development”; “The Potential of SSE for Disaster Recovery”; and “Social Enterprises and Community Development” was organized by the College. Faculty members, as well as students and CSWCD fieldwork partners, served as speakers for the SOA.
RIPESS traces its roots to the early 1990s during which local and regional SSE movements began to forge global connections to support and promote community-based economic projects as key elements of alternative social organization. To provide an enduring platform for exchange and updates of SSE concepts and practices, SSE practitioners and advocates established the International Meeting of SSE once every four years (source: 5th RIPESS International Meeting of SSE program).
The main organizers of the meeting were the RIPESS or Intercontinental Network on the Promotion of Social Solidarity Economy, Asian Solidarity Economy Council and Charles Leopald Mayer Foundation with support from Armadillo Holdings Incorporated, Quezon City Council, Light TV and the University of the Philippines.
