A forum entitled, “Ligtas at May Kasiguruhang Paninirahan: Php 18,000… Sapat nga ba sa ligtas na pabahay at paninirahan?” was held at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora, CSWCD on July 9, 2013. The CSWCD, through the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Cluster, sponsored the event which aims to engage the various stakeholders in participative discourse on informal settlements, urban disasters and disaster risk reduction.
The speakers were: Mr. Jason Miranda from the Department of the Interior and Local Government – Urban Poor, Informal Settler Families and other Special Concerns, who tackled the government perspectives on informal settler families and safe and secure settlements and Dr. Carlos Primo C. David of UP National Institute of Geological Sciences and also a member of Project Noah who discussed the Science-Based Perspectives on the causes and solutions to flooding in Metro Manila. Representatives of urban poor groups were also invited to speak on their initiatives towards a people’s agenda for secure and safe settlements and their group’s position and analysis of the government’s program on urban settlements. Mr. Jose Morales was the speaker from Aksyon para sa Kahandaan sa Kalamidad at Klima and Urban Poor Alliane of Mega Manila while Ms. Gloria Arellano was the speaker from Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap. The last speaker was Mr. Benedict Balderrama of Partnership of Philippine Support Service Agencies Inc. who tackled the civil society organizations’ advocacy on urban DRRM and climate change.
Students, staff, faculty and other members of the UP community, as well as members of urban poor groups attended the event.
