In celebration of Human Rights Day, the College of Social Work and Community Development conducted a forum on Human Rights in the Philippines last December 7, 2011. It was held at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora from 8:30 am to 12:00 noon.
Invited speakers were Atty Ricardo Sunga III, Law Reform Specialist of the UP College of Law and Director Ana Elzy Ofreneo of the Human Rights Education and Advocacy of the Commission on Human Rights. Atty Sunga talked on the history and concepts of human rights in the Philippines while Dir. Ofreneo discussed the current situation of human rights in the country.
A panel of reactors representing the women, children and indigenous people was also invited. They were Ms. Joan Jaime, National Coordinator of the Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng PIlipinas, Ms. Karla Che Umil-Balleta, Coordinator, Building Alliance through Consolidation and Expansion of the Salinlahi Alliance for Children’s Concern and Ms. Jojo Guan, Executive Director of the Center for Women’s Resources. Each one presented the state of human rights specifically in the sector they are representing.
Prof. Victor Obedicen, DCD faculty, moderated the forum.
