In upholding the UP Community Development (CD) Circle’s aspiration to put theory to practice, the organization, on its second year, had various activities aimed to pursue academic excellence and camaraderie in the service of the nation and the global community through participatory, gender responsive, empowering, and transformative integration of development theory and practice.
The organization successfully conducted several fora, trainings and workshops within and outside the university during the academic year 2010-2011. Gender Sensitivity Trainings, Team Building Activities, Facilitator Training Workshops were done every year in partnership with the other organizations in the university. In particular, the Office of Student Affairs had tied up with the organization in conducting Gender Sensitivity Trainings for the various units in the university.
It also held fora which would help CD students to understand Community Development as a course and as an advocacy such as the “Buhay Fieldwork” last December 2010 in celebration of UP CD Circle’s second year of existence as an academic organization. Moreover, the organization also conducted “Galing Gulay Kalusugan”, a health-related forum last August 2010.
The involvement of UP CD Circle was not confined to the four corners of the college. As an organization that gives importance to integration of theory and practice, the members went outside their comfort zones to immerse with the people — live, understand and learn with the people. Some of the activities involved exposure trips and volunteer work. One of these was the help extended in building and constructing houses in the relocation site of the Gawad Kalinga Habitat for Humanity in Laguna. Moreover, the organization also donated used clothing and goods for victims of disasters. The organization also took a stand in current issues prevailing in the university and joined the university-wide rally against budget-cut.
The organization was able to sustain its activities through several fund raising activities such as cake raffle, USB raffle, Bote at Dyaryo Drive and Chocolate Sale. With the help of these income generating endeavors, the group was able to come up with more activities that are not just for fun, but also for the service of the nation.
Moreover, the organization’s Education Committee sees to it that the members of the organization are not only intellectually but also socially aware of the social issues in our society. It offers the CSWCD students educational discussions on day-to-day issues that are relevant to community development.
As the organization celebrates its second year of excellence, service and fun, another year has opened for more relevant activities, programs and plans not only for the development of the members of the organization but also for the development of the college and its students as a whole.
UP CD Circle. Excellence. Service. Fun.
