Dr. Sylvia Estrada-Claudio
is a doctor of medicine who also holds a PhD in Psychology. She is a graduate of the UP College of Medicine, Batch 1981 and earned her PhD in Philippine Psychology from UP Diliman in 1996. She also did a postgraduate research fellowship at the University of Amsterdam in 1990.
She is Director of the University of the Philippines Center for Women’s Studies and Professor of the Department of Women and Development Studies, College of Social Work and Community Development, University of the Philippines.
She is an author of several publications but is proudest of the book, “Rape Love and Sexuality: The Construction of Woman in Discourse” (UP Press, 2002).
Like most Filipinas, she is known to friends by a nickname, Guy. Guy considers herself more of an activist than an academic because she has spent most of her life working in the Philippine and international social movements. Her major current engagements include being a co-founder, and now Chair of the Board of Directors of Likhaan, an organization working with grassroots women on issues of reproductive and sexual health and rights. She is also Chair of the Board of the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights with offices in Manila and Amsterdam.
