Pagkilala sa mga Nagsipagtapos Limampung Ginintuang Taon ng Paglilingkod sa Bayan: Padayon, Iskolar ng Bayan!

The 2017 CSWCD Recognition Day was held on 25 June 2017, Sunday, at Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, UP College of Music wherein a total of seventy-three (73) students obtained their undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate degrees from various programs in the college. Leading the graduates was Ms. Renalie Zennie L. Cabatu, who obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Community Development. She also graduated top of her class as the lone magna cum laude. With Cabatu were nine (9) cum laudes, six (6) of which came from the Department of Community Development (BSCD) and three (3) came from the Department of Social Work (BSSW). A total of forty-seven (47) students graduated with a Bachelor’s degree while twenty-five (25) students obtained a Master’s degree in Community Development (MCD – 14), Social Work (MSW – 4), and Women and Development Studies (MAWD – 7) respectively. Mr. Angelito B. Meneses was the only doctorate student who marched this year but he was the 11th student to finish the Doctor in Social Development (DSD) program since it started in 2009.


Chancellor Michael L. Tan, DVM, PhD was the guest speaker of the recognition day wherein he delivered an inspirational speech that sought to challenge the graduates to give back to the community and serve the people, a mandate that CSWCD wishes its graduates to practice in their respective lives. Cabatu also gave her valedictory speech wherein she shared her journey as a student of UP Diliman for six (6) years, first as an Engineering student then as a shiftee to the Community Development program. Mr. Jasper Caesar E. Jampac, MAWD graduate and Academic Excellence Awardee also gave a wonderful speech to the graduates.


UP Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino or Kontra-GaPi entertained the entire Abelardo Hall with lively indigenous music during intermissions. CSWCD Alumni Association President Ms. Caroliza Tulod-Peteros presided in the oath-taking ceremony of the graduates as newly-minted alumni of the college. Dr. Nathalie A. Verceles of DWDS and Mr. Edgie Francis B. Uyanguren were the moderators during the Recognition Day.

Department of Women and Development Studies Faculty

Rosalinda P. Ofreneo, PhD


She is currently a full professor handling courses in the Doctor in Social Development Program and the Department of Women and Development Studies.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics (major in Family Life and Child Development), a Master’s Degree in Communication, and a Ph.D. in Philippine Studies (focusing on Sociology, Psychology, and Literature), all from the University of the Philippines in Diliman.


She has many books to her name, notably Tinig at Kapangyarihan — Mga Kuwentong Buhay ng Kababaihang Manggagawa sa Bahay, her doctoral dissertation published by the U.P. Press.  She has done many published researches on the following topics:  social protection, globalization and women’s work, subcontracting and home-based work, child labor, women workers in the export processing zones, migrant women, rural women, women in the informal economy,  women, debt, and poverty, women and literature, gender and the environment,  gender and micro-finance,  prostitution and development. She has been active in the women’s movement for four decades, and is currently President of Homenet Philippines and Regional Coordinator of Homenet Southeast Asia.

Roberto I. Nazal

Rob is currently the Vice-President of BizFTC (Building Inclusive Zones for Farming Communities) Inc., a consulting and project management NGO. Rob is an experienced development professional with more than 28 years of experience gained from local and international development organizations like Institute for Studies in Asian Church and Culture (ISACC), ABS-CBN Foundation, Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Oxfam GB. In 2011, Rob joined the private sector as Head of Corporate Social Responsibility for Globe Telecom Inc. and subsequently, as Vice-President for Community Banking of BPI-Globe Banko, Southeast Asia’s first micro-finance focused, mobile based savings bank. He won several regional and international awards (Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award in 2012 for Use of Mobiles for Active Citizenship and Mondato Summit Asia 2014 for Use of Mobiles for Financial Inclusion and the GSMA 2015 Mobile World Congress for Best Use of Mobiles in Crisis or Emergency Situations) for leadership in integrating mobiles for development projects.


As a former Regional Development Adviser of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Rob delivered training courses for civil society partners in Southeast Asia, Pacific and Central Africa. He helped developed national volunteering programs in VSO country programs in Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Thailand-Burma border, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.


Rob completed his degrees at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, Masters in Industrial Relations in 1999 and Bachelor of Science in Social Work in 1989. In 1991, Rob placed 4th over-all in the national licensure examinations for Social Work by the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC).

Nancy E. Parreno 

Position: Faculty, Department of Social work

Nancy Endrinal Parreño graduated from the University of the Philippines with degrees in creative writing (B.A.) and social work, specializing in community organizing (M.A.). Her work is mainly focused women’s human rights in its various settings: abuse of women in intimate relationships, organizing and political participation, and disasters.
